Availability
Please visit this website for information about the instrument: Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale 2nd Version
Classification
Supplemental - Highly Recommended: Parkinson's Disease (PD)
Recommendations for use: Indicated for studies evaluating sleep in PD; the scale is recommended for cross sectional and longitudinal observational studies; further, the scale is also recommended for interventional studies as it has the clinically minimal significant change.
Short Description of Instrument
This Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale 2nd Version (PDSS-2) is a 15-item questionnaire that is used to address sleep problems in Parkinson's Disease (Chaudhuri et al., 2002; Trenkwalder et al., 2011). The 15 items are divided into three domains of 5 questions each: Motor symptoms at night (questions 4, 5, 6, 12, & 13), Parkinson's disease symptoms at night (questions 7, 9-11, & 15, and Disturbed sleep (questions 1-3, 8& 14) (Trenkwalder et al., 2011).
Scoring and Psychometric Properties
Scoring: Each item has a 5-point scale. With the exception of 1 question where this range is reversed, the scale range is 0 = Never, 1 = Occasionally, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Often, and 4 = Very Often. Within each domain symptoms can be scored in the range of 0 - 20 with the higher the score indicating the greater the nocturnal disturbance. The total score is equal to the summing of the three domain scores with the maximum value equal to 60 (Horvath et al., 2014; Kovacsa, Bosnyaka, Delia, Komolya, & Janszkya, 2013).

Psychometric Properties:
Good internal consistency (0.73)
Good test-retest-reliability (0.80)
Rationale/Justification
Strengths:
Addresses an extended spectrum of nocturnal disability in PD.
Easy to use for patients.
Treatment responsive.

Weaknesses:
Patient-reported instrument and may underestimate sleep impairment.
